A Liberal-Hater’s Confession

Early Girl Eatery
8 Wall Street
Asheville, NC

Beer selection: Exciting variety of local brews for lunch or breakfast!

Food: Delicious, down-home, sustainable, natural, cage-free, hormone-free, hand-scooped, grass-fed, free-range, organic, personally-blessed-by-Pope-Benedict Southern cooking.

I hate liberals.

I’ve dedicated my entire life to defeating everything they stand for.

I especially hate that they see every problem, vice and inconvenience of everyday life as an opportunity to use the levers of government to take more money and liberty from me.

Why don’t you just leave me the #@$% alone!?!

But after a visit to the Early Girl Eatery in liberal heaven Asheville, North Carolina, even I have to confess they get a few things right.

Like food. And beer.

I mean, think about it. Think about your city.

Where do “conservatives” live...and eat…and drink?

Right. On a cul-de-sac amid some cookie-cutter soulless expanse of suburban hell.

They hop in their minivan with “W” sticker attached and drive exactly 2.7 miles (which takes 15 minutes due to all the traffic lights) to the nearest strip shopping center where they dine at some corporate chain outparcel restaurant and order the “2 for 20” and a 22oz. draft of Bud Light.

Where do liberals in your city live?

Right. In the cool part of town.

With the cobblestone streets lined with a canopy of century old oak trees, 100 year old Victorian mansions and interesting, eclectic shops, bistros and bars. And the old timey movie theater that plays the obscure “edgy” (a favorite word of liberals) flicks the cineplex won’t run.

Think Germantown in Columbus. Georgetown in DC. Ghent in Norfolk. Riverside in Jacksonville. Every city’s got one.

Granted, the weirdo dope-smoking, forehead-pierced cross-dressers creep the crap out of me too, but that’s the price you have to pay for a good local craft beer and gourmet pizza.

Of course most of my friends who describe themselves as “paleo-libertarians” (think, conservatives who like to have fun) aren’t familiar with either of these living arrangements.

No. Paleo-libertarians live deep in the swamp, out in the woods or up on the mountain where they can kill their own meat, collect their own rainwater (before Obama banned it) and sit on a tinder box of ammo in anticipation of the “conservatives” and liberals screwing the whole thing up.

These are the guys who will be prepared when America is reduced to a rubble-strewn landscape patrolled by marauding flesh-eating zombies.

Okay, so these guys have probably watched “Red Dawn” and “Zombieland” a few too many times, but you get the idea. I’m headed to their house the first sign of trouble.

Which somehow gets me back to the liberal, organic, free-range downtown of Asheville, North Carolina, the quintessential liberal neighborhood.

And my confession.

Organic, free-range, all-natural just tastes better than frozen, processed, boxed, nitrated.

There. I said it.

Here’s the problem.

Unfortunately, liberals think all six billion people on the planet should be force-fed this way by government fiat.

As far as I’m concerned, if George W. Bush supporters want to live off a steady diet of Chicken McNuggets, Bud Light and high fructose corn syrup, they should be free to do so.

Me? Given the choice, I’ll take the all-natural fare served at the Early Girl Eatery.

Every day.

Everything I ordered – from the locally brewed Ninja Porter to the fried green tomatoes to the North Carolina Smoky Mountain stream trout to the candied yams to the ham-studded collard greens to the buttermilk biscuit – was made fresh, organic, all-natural and local.

And absolutely delicious.

The local organic fried green tomatoes just tasted more tomatoey. The collards tasted greener. The yams tasted yammier.

You get the idea.

And it makes sense when you think about it. The less you molest your food between seedling and plate, the better it will taste when it gets there.

That’s a concept even an avowed enemy like me of liberal dope-smoking weirdoes can appreciate.

Birkenstocks and Burgers

Al's French Fries
1251 Williston Road
South Burlington, VT 05403-5719

After months of meetings on the Left Coast I was excited to head back to the Right coast and escape the bastion of Liberalism.

Alas, it turns out that my next trip was to . . . Vermont.

Burlington, Vermont is 2492 miles away from Los Angeles, California.

But, you cant tell. It might as well be a county in Cali.

It's just colder and doesn't have as many Mexicans.

From the “Convert to Socialism” booths located on Church Street to their self avowed socialist Senator Bernie “Crazy hair” Sanders, Burlington seems to be a cross section of Socialists, Marxists, Communists, and Progressives.

Thank God they love to eat.

In this instance I had walked by enough tofu taco and smoothie houses in Cali to keep me in a perpetual state of hunger.

So I needed an influx of heart stopping, carb-filled junk and quickly.

South Burlington, Vermont was more than happy to oblige.

Al's French Fries was started in 1940 and was originally a trailer in Mallets Bay.

Later, it became a full-blown shack until -- slowly but surely -- its nationwide reputation for “the best fries on the planet” allowed them to take permanent residence on Williston Road in South Burlington.

Before I go on, I will say one epic "fail" is the lack of beer on the menu.

But keeping the original feel and ambiance of the Original Al's is first and foremost, so Suit OchoCinco felt he could let it go this time.

I stepped up to the counter, and it was old school.

Clerks yelling orders to short order cooks who were yelling orders to fry cooks.

Food flying out as quick as it was ordered.

You can stand and watch your food being prepared, and it was comforting to see the piles of sliced pig, beef, tuna, and various other animals sizzling to golden perfection.

One of the best parts about eating this type of food in Vermont is the hot dog bun.

Yes. The hot dog bun.

It’s not your typical hot dog bun which is basically all crust.

Its better.

Its like a thick piece of Wonderbread folded in half then toasted on both sides.

I was starving as always, so I ordered a quart of their famous fries, double cheeseburger, a hot dog and a tuna boat (I said I was hungry)

It came out in under four minutes, cooked to order.

The hand cut institution they call fries steamed from every corner of the carton and literally screamed for me to ingest their yummy goodness.

Now, at Al's they do it a little different.

Every table has a clear squirt bottle on it filled with Vinegar, and the locals tell me that it is imperative that you soak your fries in it.

I was game.

I soaked my fries and started in. Whoa!

These fries were second to no other I have ever had ever in my short but traveled life.

They are comfortable, home-cooked deliciousness.

Needless to say the Burger, Dog, and Tuna boat were phenomenal.

But man. Those Fries. Wow.

I walked up to the counter and ordered another quart for the ride and went on my merry way.

The land of the Birkenstocks may make me want to gag repeatedly with there incessant liberalism.

But man, they know how to make French Fries.

We have a WEINER!!

Vienna Beef Hot Dog Stand
Chicago O'Hare Airport
Chicago Illinois

Food: The Quintessantial Classic Chicago Style Hot Dog Dragged throught the Garden

After three days of mind numbing meetings I couldn’t help but be disappointed. Normally as I, SuitOchoCinco, travel the country I am blown away by the culinary treasures I am continually running into.

But not this time, my two ventures this week had left me wanting and needing more. Neither location was amazing and a quiet sadness set in, not like a “Barack Obama is President” sadness, but a sadness none the less.

I was crammed into the hotel shuttle and after 15 minutes of chaotic traffic thrown from the side door onto the curb of O’Hare airport. Herded through security like cattle I, as always, refused the naked body scanner and proceeded to my gate, C1.

Halfway down the concourse I saw it. A huge sign for the one thing I desired to try, the holy grail of culinary delights… the local hot dog. See… Chicago is known for its Chicago Dog “Dragged thru the Garden” and I have always wanted to devour one.

The sign said I’d find this treasure right near Gate C6 so I grabbed my roll along and set out on a mission. I got nervous feeling in my stomach, I mean if the Chicago Style Pizza was bunk, and the world renowned Berghoffs was less than stellar, could it be the Chicago Dog was a myth too? a chill ran through my body. There is only one way to find out.

I got to C6 and there it was… a five foot by five foot section of the airport specifically created to dole out Chicago’s most cherished treasure. I looked across the counter and was greeted with a cheerful hello and “what can I get you?”, I had waited to say this for over 20 years and I responded with, “Ill take your classic Chicago style Hot dog (pause) Dragged through the Garden. The clerk took pause at my perfect recitation of the name and smiled a half smile in acknowledgement of the fact I ordered it correctly and set to work.

She pulled out a fresh poppy seed hot dog bun and placed an extra large all beef kosher dog directly in the middle, she topped it with Frenchs yellow mustard, and proceeded to the guts, she slathered sweet relish up and down its back, followed diced onions, a multitude of tiny peppers, two fresh slices of tomato, two fresh slices of cucumber, a full sized pickle spear but that’s not all. She was missing one ingredient and she knew it as she attempted to cockily it to me… But I of course refused and asked “what about the cel……” she cut me off, she was just confirming I was a true Connoisseur of their fabled delicacy “yes the celery salt” she smiled and sprinkled on the final ingredient.

She gave me a wink and a nod that all but confirmed I met her approval, that I unlike the thousands of others that came before me… knew my wieners.

I paid her for her perfectly constructed creation and set out to find a location to partake in this culinary delight.

I sat down and grabbed a wad of napkins, and picked up the dog with BOTH hands and took my first bite… SUCCESS!!! It was the perfect blend of all the ingredients. I was instantly transported back over thirty years ago to when I tried my very first hot dog. I felt 5 again and I handily destroyed that dog making sure to devour every single last ingredient.

This was the best breakfast I have ever had. Just when I had given up. I was blown away. Who knew the Vienna Beef hot dog stand in the Chicago O’Hare Airport at gate C6 was capable of salvaging an entire trip… I certainly didn’t.

SuitOchoCinco was leaving the land of the liberals and government cheese a happy and satisfied man.
